Indigenous NRL stars Beau Champion and Rhys Wesser dropped into the Black Star studios recently while they were promoting the South Sydney Rabbitohs home game against the Newcastle Knights in Cairns. Beau, who is currently out injured and Rhys, a former Rabbitohs and QLD Maroons player spoke with Lacey and Gilmore on Black Star about their experiences as Indigenous NRL players, as well as giving an insight into the Rabbitohs preparation for the game. When asked about their feelings about playing at the smaller regional grounds, they said they enjoy the experience because of the relatively large crowds that attend the country grounds, as well as the close proximity to the fans, “its great to play at a ground that is at crowd capacity.” Rhys, who is originally from Woorabinda, also said that it was great to get involved in the regional communities, especially with the kids. The Rabbitohs are currently sitting in second on the ladder, just behind the Manly Sea Eagles.
